Impact of Demonetization on Agricultural Households in Amravati District of Maharashtra: Statistical Analysis
Abstract On 8 November 2016, the Government of India demonetized 86% of currency in an attempt to curb black money, corruption and promote digital transactions. This study examines the socio-economic impact of demonetization on agricultural households in the Amravati district of Maharashtra, which is predominantly rural and dependent on agriculture. Using primary and secondary data including surveys of 300 households in Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Yavatmal and Washim districts, this paper analyses the disruptions in agricultural trade, income and financial inclusion. Statistical tools such as regression analysis and paired t-tests reveal significant short-term declines in household income (15-20%) and market access, especially for small farmers. The study highlights regional disparities, with Amravati district showing resilience due to better banking infrastructure. Long-term impacts include increased digital adoption but continued financial exclusion in remote areas. The policy recommendations emphasize targeted interventions for rural economies to mitigate future macroeconomic shocks.
