Resilient Yet Strained: Understanding the Challenges Facing Indian Democracy

Abstract One of the democratic experiments that have been going on for the longest time and the largest in the world is the Indian democracy. Since it gained its independence in 1947, India has held elections that are guaranteed to be free and fair. This is due to the fact that its Constitution is federal to nature and secular. However, throughout the course of the past several years, academics, members of civil society, and observers from around the world have all voiced their concern regarding the erosion of democratic ideals, the consolidation of power, the repression of dissent, and the deterioration of institutions. Taking into consideration issues pertaining to politics, institutions, society, and the media, this essay examines the paradox of India's democracy continuing to thrive despite the fact that some circumstances are becoming more difficult. According to the report, India's democratic system is still operational, but the country's fundamental principles are being challenged; hence, reforms and participation from the general public are required. The analysis of qualitative data and secondary data is what enables it to accomplish this.
