THE EVOLVING ROLE OF NON-BANKING FINANCIAL COMPANIES IN INDIA'S FINANCIAL SYSTEM: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) are an intrinsic part of the Indian financial system, being a major contributor to the expansion of credit in the economy’s key sector. These entities play a pivot and complementary role in the banking system, enhancing competition, broadening access to financial services and diversifying the financial sector. Throughout the decades, NBFCs have enlarged their range across housing loan, vehicle finance, microfinance gold loans, and small and medium enterprise (SME) lending, so encouraging financial inclusion and boosting the economy. This conceptual study tracks the historical growth, sectoral contribution, and strategic positioning of NBFCs within the larger financial infrastructure to analyse their evolution in India. It also evaluates key opportunities arising from technological innovation, regulatory reforms, and emerging market needs, while critically analysing the challenges posed by liquidity constraints, asset quality deterioration, compliance costs, and heightened competition. Helping on secondary literature, RBI publications, industry reports, and academic analyses, the paper synthesises existing knowledge to identify gaps and propose policy directions. As per the study’s findings, NBFCs are still essential for inclusive growth, but their sustainability will depend on, adaptive regulation, prudent risk management and strategic adoption of technology-driven models.
