The Silent Revolution: When AI Learns to Keep Secrets
This work introduces the concept of the Privacy Pause, a theoretical and experimental protocol designed to regulate interactions between humans and conversational AI systems. Unlike existing technical safeguards, the Privacy Pause operates as a linguistic switch that creates sealed contexts for sensitive disclosures, enabling users to explicitly activate or deactivate protected dialogue windows. Drawing on theories of contextual integrity, infraethics, and critiques of surveillance capitalism, the model highlights both the potential and the limitations of trust in AI-mediated communication. While it does not provide cryptographic or legal guarantees, the Privacy Pause reframes user–AI interaction as an intentional and ethically grounded act, offering a replicable framework for reinforcing user agency, autonomy, and awareness in digital dialogues.
