Epidemiology and Outcomes of Infective Endocarditis in a Brooklyn Community Hospital- A Comparison of Pre- and Post-Pandemic Eras

This poster was presented at the American College of Physicians (ACP) Internal Medicine Meeting 2025, held April 3–5 in New Orleans, LA.It describes a retrospective cohort study conducted at Maimonides Medical Center, evaluating the epidemiology, complications, and outcomes of infective endocarditis (IE) before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The study included 257 patients (146 pre-pandemic, 111 post-pandemic) diagnosed with IE using the 2023 Duke-ISCVID criteria. Findings revealed a higher rate of complications such as acute kidney injury, septic shock, and embolic stroke in the post-pandemic era, yet in-hospital mortality was lower, likely due to earlier microorganism detection and improved antimicrobial therapy. These results highlight the importance of antibiotic stewardship programs in improving IE outcomes. Keywords: ACP 2025, Internal Medicine, Poster, Infective Endocarditis, COVID-19, Outcomes, Antibiotic Stewardship
