Epidemiology and Outcomes of Infective Endocarditis in a Brooklyn Community Hospital- A Comparison of Pre- and Post-Pandemic Eras
Poster presented atSociety of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Annual Scientific Meeting 2025May 14–17, 2025 • Hollywood, Florida (Diplomat Beach Resort) This retrospective cohort study evaluated the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of infective endocarditis (IE) in a Brooklyn community hospital across the pre-pandemic (2016–2019) and post-pandemic (2021–2024) eras. Using the 2023 Duke-ISCVID diagnostic criteria, 257 hospitalized patients with confirmed IE were included (146 pre-pandemic; 111 post-pandemic). Key findings: The post-pandemic group demonstrated higher complication rates, including acute kidney injury, septic shock, and embolic stroke. Despite these complications, in-hospital mortality was lower compared to the pre-pandemic era, possibly due to earlier pathogen detection and targeted antimicrobial therapy. The study highlights the importance of effective antibiotic stewardship programs in improving patient outcomes.
