ICT in Fisheries Extension: Bridging the Information Gap

Fisheries Extension plays a pivotal role in empowering fishers and aquaculture farmers through the dissemination of knowledge, technologies, and advisory services. However, traditional extension methods often fall short in addressing the dynamic and location-specific needs of fishers. In this context, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has emerged as a transformative tool in fisheries extension, bridging the critical information gap. ICT tools—including mobile phones, GIS, radio, internet-based platforms, and specialized applications—facilitate real-time communication, enhance access to weather forecasts, market data, and best practices, and support decision-making. Initiatives such as the Fisher Friend mobile app, INCOIS advisories, Kisan Call Centres, AquaChoupal, and One Stop Aqua Shops exemplify how ICT enhances extension service delivery. ICT also supports capacity building, early warning systems, and participatory learning through digital content and interactive platforms. Despite its potential, the adoption of ICT in fisheries extension faces challenges such as digital literacy, infrastructure constraints, and socio-economic inequalities. Therefore, a holistic strategy integrating capacity development, stakeholder participation, and supportive policy frameworks is essential for strengthening fisheries extension through ICT.
