Agrarian Life on Trial: Looking into a Farmer's Choice in A Hidden Life (2019)

The objective of the present article is to offer an in-depth analysis of Terrance Malick’s use of agrarian imagery in A Hidden Life, and its contribution to the film’s aesthetic and thematic richness. Furthermore, by looking into the symbiotic relationship between humans and Nature, the study highlights the rhythms, beauty, and purity of agrarian existence as integral to the narrative. It examines the moral and existential themes, focusing on the protagonist Franz Jägerstätter’s inner conflict and ethical dilemmas during the turbulent period of World War II. The article explores the tension between personal conviction and societal pressure, analysing how the protagonist’s steadfast principles clash with the external demands placed upon him. Moreover, it critiques the representation of agrarian life, balancing the idyllic portrayal of rural simplicity with the inherent challenges faced by farmers. Through this dual lens, the article seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of Malick’s depiction of rural life and its broader philosophical implications. By offering insights into Malick’s distinctive filmmaking style, particularly his visual and narrative techniques, the study intends to enrich the academic discourse surrounding his work and highlight the depth of his exploration into the human condition within the natural world. The article relies on the lived experience of the protagonist of the film corresponding to Existentialism which Sartre outlines in his famous essay “Existentialism Is a Humanism (1946).”
