The Languages of Diplomacy in 18th-Century Russia
This poster presents a digital edition prepared within a DFG-funded research project on the languages of eighteenth-century Russian diplomacy. The project examines what languages Russian diplomats used, where, and why. The focus is on linguistic policies and the social and professional strategies behind language choice. One of the key topics is the rise of French as a lingua franca versus local languages. This edition's purpose is not to publish a full corpus of diplomatic documents, rather an illustration of language choices. Through these documents, it will be possible to explore language variation by recipient, context, time, in both professional and personal writings.
