D5.2. Guideline to ascertain the quality assurance including proposal for revision/generation of harmonized test/ product standards
Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) presents a critical challenge for the construction industry, with substantial environmental, social, and economic implications. The RECONMATIC project aims to address these challenges by developing methodologies that enhance circularity, climate neutrality, and the quality assurance of CDW materials. A key focus is the establishment of harmonized test and product standards to validate materials, ensuring their compliance with industry and market expectations.A core objective of this initiative is to improve the service life and fitness for use of construction products and systems through advanced assessment techniques. Selective dismantling processes and non-destructive testing methods enable a thorough evaluation of construction components, identifying opportunities for reuse in their original form or alternative applications. This approach not only reduces waste but also conserves valuable resources. To maximize the potential of CDW material valorization, RECONMATIC is developing methodologies for assessing and optimizing material utility across different processing streams, including on-site and off-site sorting. Special attention is given to mineral fractions, as well as materials such as wood, glass, and plastics. By conducting initial assessments, closing information gaps, and defining purification needs, the project facilitates the integration of high-quality recycled materials into the construction sector. Comprehensive fitness-for-use evaluations and targeted R&D recommendations ensure compliance with evolving industry standards. The project also emphasizes the integration of these methodologies into the broader construction ecosystem. By leveraging Building Information Modelling (BIM), RECONMATIC enhances data-driven decision-making for selective dismantling and deconstructionplanning. Additionally, the adoption of non-destructive testing and BIM-based tracking for recovered materials strengthens their viability for reuse and ensures interoperability with other project work packages.A key innovation within RECONMATIC is the digitalization of quality control and quality assurance processes. By integrating advanced digital tools, including AI-driven material assessment and real-time monitoring the project enhances transparency, accuracy, and efficiency in quality validation. These digital solutions enable automated compliance verification, streamline certification pathways, and foster trust in CDW-derived materials across the supply chain.Market barriers related to CDW materials are also addressed through strategies aimed at achieving certification under relevant standards and quality certification, such as CE marking and the EU Construction Products Regulation. Where certification is not feasible, transparent reporting mechanisms are introduced to build trust in high-recycled-content materials. Furthermore, stakeholder engagement initiatives and public awareness campaigns aim to overcome misconceptions and promote incentives such as tax reductions and subsidies to accelerate circular construction practices. By establishing a robust framework for quality assurance and harmonized testing standards, RECONMATIC ensures that CDW-derived materials meet stringent performance criteria. This initiative supports the transition towards a sustainable and scalable construction sector, fostering environmental responsibility and economic viability.
