Responsible use of AI in Research

Generative Artificial Intelligence is transforming research practices, but its responsible use raises critical questions about integrity, transparency, privacy, and compliance. This presentation introduces the European Commission’s Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research and outlines six practical recommendations for researchers: (1) maintain responsibility for scientific output, (2) ensure transparency, (3) safeguard privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual property, (4) respect legislation, (5) engage in continuous learning to build AI literacy, and (6) refrain from using AI in sensitive activities such as peer review or proposal evaluation. By combining principles of research integrity with evolving guidance on trustworthy AI, the talk highlights how researchers can benefit from AI tools while minimizing risks such as bias, hallucinations, unfair assessment, or data misuse. The guidelines are conceived as living — adapting dynamically to technological progress and policy developments — and aim to foster responsible use of AI in research.
