A REVIEW ON FORMULATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF OCTREOTIDE MICROSPHERES
The long-acting release (LAR) formulation of the somatostatin analogue octreotide, known as octreotide microspheres, has greatly enhanced the therapeutic treatment of hormone-related conditions such neuroendocrine tumors and acromegaly. The development, formulation techniques, pharmacokinetics, clinical effectiveness, and safety profile of octreotide microspheres are highlighted in this study. These microspheres, which use biodegradable polymers, mainly poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), allow for persistent drug release after monthly intramuscular treatment. This provides a significant benefit over short-acting preparations in terms of therapeutic consistency and patient compliance. Clinical research shows how well they work to decrease overproduction of hormones, lessen symptoms associated with tumors, and enhance quality of life. Although usually well accepted, it is crucial to pay attention to possible side effects such changes in glucose metabolism, gallbladder issues, and gastrointestinal problems. In order to better optimize long-term treatment results, this study examines current developments in delivery technologies and highlights the therapeutic utility of octreotide microspheres. Keywords: Octreotide microspheres; Long-acting release (LAR); PLGA; Neuroendocrine tumors; Drug delivery; Therapeutic efficacy.
