East-West Encounters and the Idea of Cultural Hybridity: An Insight into Select Novels of R.K. Narayan

This paper intends to investigate the East-West cultural interactions and the birth of cultural hybridity as featured in the novels of R.K. Narayan, namely The Guide, The Vendor of Sweets, and The Painter of Signs. The article will heavily draw insights from Postcolonial theoretical concepts — particularly, Homi K. Bhabha’s idea of the “third space” and the performativity of hybrid identities. It examines how the interactions between two cultures - the East and the West are not simply antagonistic collisions, but are complex negotiations marked by ambivalence, mimicry, and confused hybridity. Narayan’s fictional microcosm, Malgudi, operates as an indigenous site wherein characters confront the changing ambience, reconstitute their subjectivities in response to both their indigenous imperatives and the new imports of colonial modernity. At the same time, through his novels Narayan complicates the notions of identity, tradition and modernity by foregrounding the lived experiences and emergent anxieties of Postcolonial selfhood. This paper argues that Narayan’s literary works are a cultural critique, wherein hybridity emerges not merely as a confused condition but as a dynamic, interstitial process that problematizes fixed categories of East and West, self and other, modernity and tradition.
