Parental Participation and Reading Skills of Learners

Parental participation is the active engagement of parents in their child's education. The study aimed to assess parental participation while also examining the level of reading skills of learners. The study was conducted in Taraka, Lanao del Sur, among one hundred seventy-seven (177) parent respondents. It used the stratified random sampling technique and employed correlational and causal designs with documentary analysis from the Phil-IRI. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistical tools such as Frequency and Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Multiple Linear Regression. Findings revealed that respondents had limited access to educational materials and faced challenges in fostering reading development at home. Parental participation, particularly in terms of reading attitudes and early literacy experiences, were found to have a significant influence on learners' reading skills. The study also demonstrated that targeted instructional interventions can enhance reading skills and encourage independent reading. The findings highlight the importance of parental participation, home literacy resources, and appropriate instructional interventions in promoting children's reading development. Thus, this study recommends that a future study to examine how cultural and socio-economic factors influence parental participation, home literacy resources, and children's reading development.
