The importance of the absence of short columns and soft floors in seismic safety during the design and construction stages
It is during an earthquake that a building must perform optimally, and in seismically active areas, engineering is primarily done for seismic design. Among the various parameters of an earthquake-resistant building, two categories of short columns and soft floors have played an important role in seismic failure and require special attention. Unfortunately, little attention is paid to this issue, even in structures where most of the seismic points and lateral resistance systems have been observed. The so-called short columns and soft floors are specialized categories and their formation must be prevented at the design stage and their points must be observed at the construction stage. However, there are also solutions for constructed buildings, including retrofitting, that can be implemented.
