The Legacy of Mirabai: Bhakti Tradition and its Contemporary Cultural Manifestations
The enduring appeal of Mirabai, the sixteenth-century Bhakti poet, surpasses temporal and spatial limitations. It is speculated that she gave up her royal existence and kshatriya status to pursue spiritual activities in the public domain. As a result, she is accused of being a suspicious character and faces criticism, exclusion and abuse from her community. As she sings and dances to bhajans during her travels, Mirabai moves between public and private life, becoming a figure who is both pure and brave. This paper examines the enduring influence of Mirabai in contemporary popular culture. By analysing her representation in literature, music, cinema and other media, this study explores how Mira Bai's devotion and defiance continue to resonate in contemporary times. The paper argues that Mirabai's legacy serves as a bridge between traditional Bhakti practices and contemporary cultural expressions, highlighting her role as a symbol of spiritual liberation and social rebellion.
