OPTIMIZING ON-SHORE FUEL CELL REFUELING SYSTEMS TO ENHANCE TEMESA FERRIES OPERATIONS

The maritime industry plays a vital role in global transportation but is also a major contributor to environmental pollution due to heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Vessels powered by conventional fuels emit significant greenhouse gases and pollutants, driving the urgent need for cleaner energy alternatives. In Tanzania, where ferry operations are essential for transportation, this challenge is compounded by the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, exposing the sector to market volatility and supply insecurity. Against this backdrop, hydrogen fuel cell technology emerges as a promising sustainable solution. This technology generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water and heat as byproducts, thereby eliminating carbon emissions. Its adoption could drastically reduce environmental impacts while enhancing energy security by lessening reliance on imported fossil fuels. This study explores the feasibility and benefits of implementing optimized on-shore hydrogen fuel cell refueling systems for ferry operations in Tanzania, aiming to improve operational stability, reduce emissions, and promote sustainable maritime transport. The findings contribute to understanding the role of hydrogen fuel cell technology in transforming ferry operations in developing countries, offering insights for policy makers and stakeholders focused on green energy transitions in the maritime sector.
