Investment Preferences Among Mumbai Residents: A Comprehensive Analysis of Trends and Influencing Factors
ABSTRACT The study examines the investment preferences of urban Indian investors through a survey of Mumbai residents, exploring how demographic characteristics and financial awareness shape asset allocation decisions. The research employs a stratified sampling methodology to capture diverse socioeconomic perspectives, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative assessment tools. Analysis reveals distinct generational patterns in risk tolerance, with younger investors demonstrating markedly different preferences compared to older cohorts. Gender emerges as a significant factor influencing investment choices, particularly in traditional versus modern asset classes. The findings highlight a persistent gap between financial knowledge and investment behavior, with awareness of various instruments not necessarily translating into participation. Digital platforms appear to be reshaping how investors access financial information, especially among younger demographics. Contrary to conventional assumptions about Indian investment preferences, the results suggest evolving attitudes toward traditional asset classes like real estate and gold. Methodologically, the study contributes an innovative approach to measuring behavioral factors in urban financial decision-making. The results offer important insights for financial service providers seeking to develop targeted products for different demographic segments. Policymakers may find value in the identified barriers to broader market participation, particularly those relating to financial accessibility and awareness. These findings advance the understanding of behavioral finance in emerging urban markets, providing a foundation for future research on metropolitan investment patterns. The study's focus on Mumbai, as India's financial capital, yields particularly relevant insights for practitioners operating in similar rapidly developing urban economies. The research underscores the need for more nuanced approaches to financial product design and investor education in dynamic urban environments.
