RISE OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN INDIA: SARDAR PATEL
"Iron Man of India," is celebrated for his remarkable contribution to the unification of princely states after independence. A fearless and patriotic leader, he played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement. He was a staunch advocate of secularism and humanism, both in thought and action, and firmly believed that unity among all Indians, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion, was essential to liberate the country from British rule. He deeply respected women and played a pivotal role in their empowerment. His inspiring speeches, particularly those addressing women, had a lasting impact. In one of his speeches, he boldly criticized the tradition of women wearing heavy brass ornaments, describing it as a barrier to their freedom. His words encouraged women to step out of traditional confines and participate actively in the freedom movement. A notable example of his influence is the Bardoli Satyagraha, where women joined the struggle with great enthusiasm and commitment, making it a powerful moment in the history of India’s fight for independence. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel strongly criticized the purdah system in India. He opposed the practice of keeping women in seclusion, considering it a reflection of a man’s cowardice. Patel saw this system as a major barrier to women's freedom and progress, as well as an obstacle to the overall development of society and the nation. He encouraged women to resist such regressive customs and actively supported their participation in the national freedom movement. Through his efforts, he inspired women to recognize their value not just in society, but also in the nation-building process. He stressed that for true unity, people must rise above these divisions and embrace the common identity of being Indian. Hence, this article articulates on principles of gender equality and empowerment of women by Sardar Patel.
