A Critical Academic Response to Dr Reza Parchizadeh's Vision on China, Russia, and Iran
This paper offers a critical academic response to Dr. Reza Parchizadeh's article "Is China Filling Russia's Vacuum in Iran after Israel's Twelve-Day War?" (2025). While Parchizadeh argues that China is emerging as Iran's indispensable partner following Russia's decline, this study challenges such a reductionist framing. It demonstrates that Iran's vulnerabilities stem not only from external patronage shifts but also from profound internal weaknesses, including economic collapse, intelligence failures, and declining proxy effectiveness. The paper introduces the "bait-and-discard" mechanism as a conceptual framework to explain how great powers instrumentalize fragile states as expendable tools rather than reliable allies. Case studies from Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia further illustrate this dynamic. The paper concludes that Iran is not at the dawn of substitution, but at the edge of strategic isolation, and that Western policies should focus less on great-power rivalry and more on Iran's internal fragility.
