Literary Nuances: A Survey on the Superiority of Human v/s Machine Translation of French Texts

Abstract: Translating manifests as a tool that fosters intercultural communication, especially in literature, where the minutiae of language articulation affect the contextual meaning of a text. As globalization progresses, so does the production of literary material, which usually leads to higher demand for effective translation techniques. This, in return, increases the frequency of both Human and Machine translation use. The combination of Human and Machine Translation is finding more acceptance in education, especially for translating French literary texts. This paper analyses the productivity of Humans and Machines in French literary texts. A detailed study on translators, linguists, and readers will help evaluate the overall sentiments towards human-translated texts compared to those produced by a Machine. This research contributes to the ongoing debate regarding the place of technology in translation by highlighting the pros and cons of both techniques. This paper analyses the differences between Machine and Human Translation as applied to French literature. We surveyed translators, linguists, and other readers to measure both human and machine translations' quality, reception, and nuances. The information suggests that as much as Machine Translation offers ease and speed, Human Translation is preferred mainly because of its ability to grasp the nuances and intricacies of exceptional literature. This research highlights the significance of the human translator’s contribution towards the appropriate translation of distinctly artistic and culturally advanced works of literature, showing that technology alone is not enough to ensure quality in the translation of French Literary texts.
