SHORT-TERM EARNINGS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA VS LONG TERM CAREER GROWTH

The rapid rise of social media has introduced short-term income opportunities—from brand deals to platform monetization—that are reshaping youth aspirations worldwide. This paper examines how the perceived autonomy offered by influencer careers increasingly diverts young people from formal education and long-term skill development. Drawing on global and India-specific data, surveys, and psychological research, the study explores the psychological, educational, and economic implications of this shift. It argues that the illusion of financial independence often masks deeper trade-offs, including deteriorating mental health, reduced academic engagement, and unstable income streams. The paper concludes with institutional and policy-level recommendations to better prepare youth for a digitally connected yet sustainable future, emphasizing the need for integrated efforts by families, educators, and platforms.
