PILGRIMAGE TOURISM IN AYODHYA: AN ANALYSIS OF TRENDS, PATTERNS, AND EMERGING DYNAMICS (APRIL 2024–APRIL 2025)
Ayodhya has entered a defining phase of pilgrimage tourism after the consecration of the Ram Mandir in January 2024. This historic moment has reshaped not only the city’s spiritual identity but also the way pilgrims travel, gather, and engage with sacred spaces. This study examines the first year following the consecration (April 2024–April 2025) to understand how pilgrim flows, community practices, and urban systems have adapted. Using a mixed-methods approach, it draws on tourism statistics, policy documents, and academic studies, while also capturing local voices—pilgrims, priests, shopkeepers, hoteliers, transport workers, tour operators, and volunteers. Together, these insights map visitor patterns, festive peaks, spending habits, infrastructure growth, and sustainability challenges. Findings reveal unprecedented surges in pilgrim arrivals, particularly during Ram Navami, Diwali, and the temple’s anniversary. The hospitality and transport sectors have expanded rapidly, while pilgrim spending increasingly extends beyond rituals to cultural and experiential offerings. At the same time, the city faces rising pressures on waste management, water supply, traffic systems, public safety, and its sensitive riverfront ecology. The paper argues that Ayodhya’s future as a model of sustainable spiritual tourism depends on balancing growth with sanctity. Careful planning, cultural stewardship, community benefits, and festival-ready urban services will be essential to ensure that access, authenticity, and sustainability evolve together.
