Challenges for global food safety : top-down view
Food safety today faces m ultifaceted challenges involving microbiological, chemical, toxicological, and behavioral risks. Through our research projects such as ImpTox, EuroMix, FoodGuard, Cyantir, MycoKey, WaterResist we have highlighted the need for integrated, mechanism-based approaches. Emerging hazards like micro- and nanoplastics and cumulative contaminant exposures demand the use of New Approach Methodologies. Consumer trust remains fragile and must be rebuilt through transparent risk communication and participatory governance. Traditional food safety management systems (FSMS) must evolve to account for human behaviour and organizational culture. Climate change, globalization, and digitalization further intensify risk complexity. Digital tools, behaviour-based auditing, and predictive modelling offer new pathways to the resilience of food systems. Leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and regulatory alignment are essential. Through ICFMH we try to build bridges and balance food safety knowledge throughout the World.
