Erythrogonia Melichar 1926
Checklist of Erythrogonia species The annotated checklist provided below is adapted from Freytag (2015) and Dmitriev et al. (2024). Distributional records of previously known species were compiled from the works of Medler (1963), Young (1977), Zanol & de Menezes (1982), Freytag & Sharkey (2002), Wilson et al. (2009), Mejdalani et al. (2009), Freytag (2015), Mejdalani & Cavichioli (2016), Keil & Lozada (2021), Froza et al. (2021), Pinedo-Escatel et al. (2024), and Takiya et al. (2024). An asterisk (*) after a locality name indicates a new distribution record. 1. E. accepta Medler, 1963 — Mexico (states of San Luis Potosí and Puebla). 2. E. acuminata Freytag, 2015 — Colombia (department of Meta). 3. E. adolfoi sp. nov. — Brazil (state of Acre). 4. E. albovittata Melichar, 1926 — Peru (no additional information available). 5. Material examined: Mexico: 4♀, state of Michoacán, MZSP. 11. E. aurivagula (Jacobi, 1905) (Fig. 1)— Colombia (department of Amazonas), Brazil * (states of Amazonas, Acre, and Rondônia), Peru (regions of Huánuco, Madre de Dios*, and Cusco), and Bolivia (departments of La Paz and Santa Cruz). Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Amazonas, MZSP; 1♂, state of Acre, DZRJ; 1♂, 1♀, state of Rondônia, DZUP. Peru: 1♂, 1♀, region of Madre de Dios, DZRJ. 12. E. brunnea Mejdalani & Cavichioli, 2016 — Brazil (states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul *). Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Rio Grande do Sul, DZUP. 17. E. calva (Taschenberg, 1884) (Fig. 2)— Venezuela (no additional information available [record probably incorrect]), Brazil (states of Mato Grosso *, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul), and Argentina (no additional information available). Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Mato Grosso, DZUP. Comments: The record of E. calva from Venezuela is likely incorrect, especially considering the distance between this country and the confirmed records of this species from Brazil and Argentina. The Venezuelan record is perhaps due to an incorrect specimen identification or mistaken label data. 18. E. clavata Freytag, 2015 — Colombia (department of Putumayo). 19. E. colorata (Germar, 1821) (Fig. 3)— Brazil (states of Mato Grosso *, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo). Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Mato Grosso, DZUP. 20. E. comensa Medler, 1963 — Brazil (state of Rio Grande do Sul) and Argentina (provinces of Salta and Tucumán). 21. E. dalvae sp. nov. — Brazil (state of Amazonas). 22. E. dietrichi sp. nov. — Brazil (state of Goiás). 23. E. dirhachis Freytag, 2015 — Bolivia (department of Santa Cruz). 24. E. dottaga Medler, 1963 (Fig. 4)— Brazil (states of Maranhão *, Ceará *, Pernambuco *, Bahia *, Tocantins *, Goiás *, Mato Grosso *, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná *, and Rio Grande do Sul) and Argentina (province of Misiones). Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Maranhão, DZUP; 1♂, state of Ceará, DZRJ; 1♀, state of Pernambuco, DZUP; 1♀, state of Bahia, DZUP; 5♂, 5♀, state of Tocantins, DZUP; 1♂, state of Goiás, MZSP; 3♂, state of Mato Grosso, MZSP; 1♀, state of Paraná, DZUP. Comments: Erythrogonia dottaga shares many external morphological similarities with E. comensa. The distribution of E. comensa is apparently restricted to southern Brazil and northern Argentina (see above); although more studies are necessary, there are indications that specimens identified as E. dottaga in these regions may actually belong to E. comensa. 27. E. dubia Medler, 1963 — Brazil (state of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais). Comments: Medler (1963) suggests the existence of a sexguttata species complex, in which E. dubia would be included. Although more studies are needed to clarify this matter, there are indications that records attributed to E. dubia may in fact correspond to E. sexguttata. 28. E. duplicata Melichar, 1926 — Bolivia (department of La Paz). 29. E. eburata Melichar, 1926 — Peru (regions of Huánuco and Cusco). 30. E. execta Medler, 1963 — Mexico (states of Sonora, Sinaloa, Colima, and Yucatán), Belize (no additional information available), and Nicaragua * (North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region). Material examined: Nicaragua: 3♂, North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, DZUP. 35. E. expanda Freytag, 2015 — Colombia (department of Meta). 36. E. jumaca Medler, 1963 — Venezuela (no additional information available), Guyana (region of Alto Tacutu-Alto Essequibo), French Guiana (commune of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni), Ecuador (provinces of Napo, Pastaza, and Zamora-Chinchipe *), and Brazil (states of Amapá * and Pará). Material examined: Ecuador: 1♀, province of Zamora-Chinchipe, USNM. Brazil: 1♂, state of Amapá, MZSP. 47. E. kokomona Medler, 1963 — Colombia (department of Amazonas), Brazil (states of Amazonas* and Pará), and Peru (region of Cusco). Material examined: Brazil: 1♂, state of Amazonas, INPA. 48. Material examined: Brazil: 1♀, state of Amapá, INPA. Comments: According to Medler (1963) and Young (1977), E. laeta shares external and male terminalia similarities with various species, including E. anduzei, E. comensa, E. dottaga, E. dubia, E. fractina, E. gossana, E. mixta, E. partita, E. relegata, E. sexguttata, and E. spottana. There are indications that records of E. laeta in the states of São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul (Zanol & de Menezes 1982) may be incorrect, actually referring to one or more of these similar species. 50. E. lateralis Freytag, 2015 — Colombia (department of Cauca). 51. E. laudata (Walker, 1858) — Mexico (states of Yucatán and Chiapas), Belize (no additional information available), Guatemala (departments of Alta Verapaz, Izabal, and Zacapa), and Honduras (departments of Atlántida and Francisco Morazán). 52. E. leucospila (Walker, 1858) — Peru (no additional information available). Comments: As reported by Young (1977), E. leucospila is probably known only from the holotype deposited in the Natural History Museum, London, which has no abdomen. 53. E. lobata Freytag, 2015 — Colombia (department of Vaupés) and Brazil * (states of Roraima, Amazonas, and Pará). Material examined: Brazil: 1♂, state of Roraima, INPA; 7♂, 4♀, state of Amazonas, DZUP; 1♂, 1♀, state of Pará, INPA. 54
