From Weapons to Watts: Using Nuclear Technology to End Global Energy Poverty

From Weapons to Watts: Using Nuclear Technology to End Global Energy Poverty This report explores the potential of nuclear technology to address one of the most urgent global challenges: the lack of access to reliable electricity. While nuclear innovation has historically been tied to military programs, this paper examines how those same scientific advancements can be redirected toward peaceful, developmental goals. The analysis highlights: The scale of global energy poverty, with nearly 8% of the world’s population still lacking access to electricity. The economic and environmental advantages of nuclear power compared to fossil fuels. How small modular reactors (SMRs) and next-generation nuclear technologies could be deployed in developing regions. Policy pathways for transforming nuclear’s role from military deterrence to sustainable development. By reframing nuclear technology as a tool for progress rather than conflict, this report argues that it can play a central role in achieving universal energy access, accelerating sustainable development, and reducing global inequality.
