From GEO to AIVO: Why Generative Engine Optimization Is Obsolete
This paper examines the short-lived concept of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), which emerged in the early 2020s as an attempt to adapt SEO techniques to generative AI. GEO emphasized influencing external sources and prompts but lacked governance and measurable standards. The analysis concludes that GEO is an obsolete marketing term, superseded by AI Visibility Optimization (AIVO). AIVO introduces auditable KPIs such as the Prompt-Space Occupancy Score (PSOS™), enabling transparent measurement of brand visibility in AI assistants.
