Illocutionary Logic from a Paraconsistent Reasoning Perspective
Human communication routinely involves contradictions that generate rather than destroy meaning—ironic statements, emphatic repetitions, metaphorical identities, and countless other pragmatic phenomena that exploit logical tensions for communicative effect. Yet formal approaches to speech act theory, most notably Searle and Vanderveken's Illocutionary Logic, rely on classical logical foundations that treat any contradiction as catastrophic system failure. This paper argues that paraconsistent logic, which allows productive reasoning in the presence of contradiction without triggering explosion, provides the natural formal foundation for modeling human communicative competence. Through detailed analysis of four paradigmatic cases—emphatic pleonasm ("War is war"), ironic contradiction ("Paulo is an Albert Einstein"), definitional obviousness ("I am my father's son"), and contrastive conjunction ("Yuri is ugly, but nice")—this investigation demonstrates how paraconsistent operators can formalize precisely those pragmatic phenomena that classical logic renders trivial or incoherent. By integrating Vanderveken's seven-component analysis of illocutionary force with non-explosive negation, we develop formal representations that preserve the contradictory structure essential to pragmatic interpretation while deriving determinate, contextually appropriate meanings. The resulting framework resolves the longstanding tension between logical rigor and empirical adequacy in formal pragmatics, suggesting that contradiction is not a logical pathology, but a systematic resource for generating the creative meanings that distinguish human communication from mere information transfer.
