A Snapshot of Challenges and Opportunities in Customs Administration: Experiences of BS Customs Students at St. Joseph College-Olongapo, Inc. (SY 2024-2025)
ABSTRACT This research examines the readiness of BS Customs Administration students in the Philippines to face the challenges and opportunities within the transforming global trade environment. Utilizing a quantitative survey design, information was gathered from BS Customs Administration students to measure their self-perceived challenges (continuous Learning, ethicality, industry knowledge, technical skill gaps) and opportunities (internship, professional growth, expansion in international trade, specialized expertise). The results indicated a high sense of student self-efficacy about their existing skill set and an active attitude towards lifelong Learning, emphasizing the significance of internships. Nevertheless, a poor positive correlation (r = 0.311) between perceived challenges and opportunities indicates a weak inclination for students to perceive challenges as potential means of development, emphasizing the importance of developing a growth mindset. Students defined areas needing improvement, especially in communications and obtaining specialized training, highlighting a self-assessed shortfall of institutional support to gain specialized knowledge. Students identified that while positively perceiving growth in global trade, a relative weakness existed in being knowledgeable of international trade agreements. The study concludes with suggestions on bringing customs administration education into line with industry needs by strengthening institutional support for specialized training and communication skills development, while cultivating a mindset of growth that regards challenges as chances to improve. Such an integrated approach will more effectively prepare graduates to succeed in the evolving global customs environment.
