Baumann's Spherism: Seeing the Sphere as Reality Beyond Appearances
This essay introduces Spherism, the proposition that the sphere is the fundamental essence of reality. While objects appear as pencils, cups, or mountains with angular outlines, these are perspectival distortions shaped by the limitations of human perception. We perceive only fragments at any given moment, constrained by our spatiotemporal vantage. To approximate the whole, we must rotate objects or ourselves, piecing together partial views. Were it possible to perceive all perspectives at once, as if we possessed an infinite number of distributed eyes encircling an object, every form would resolve into a sphere. The sphere emerges not only as a recurring motif in philosophy and art but also as the equilibrium form in physics and the invariant in geometry. Spherism therefore suggests that all apparent forms are shadows of a deeper spherical essence that underlies reality.
