THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIALYSIS ADEQUACY AND PSYCHOLOGICAL QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG DIALYSIS PATIENTS

Dialysis patients often experience a significant decline in their quality of life due to the physical and emotional demands of the treatment. Adequate dialysis is crucial for maintaining physical health, but its impact on psychological quality of life remains understudied. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dialysis adequacy and psychological quality of life among dialysis patients, with a focus on identifying potential predictors of psychological well-being. The study employed an availability sampling method in assessing a sample of dialysis patients from a renal clinic. The study used a combination of clinical and self-report measures to assess dialysis adequacy and psychological quality of life. Dialysis adequacy was evaluated using standard clinical parameters, while psychological quality of life was assessed using the Short Form 12 (SF-12) mental component summary (MCS) score. The study also collected demographic and clinical data, including age, sex, comorbidities, and dialysis vintage. The results showed a significant positive correlation between dialysis adequacy and psychological quality of life (r = 0.25, p = 0.05) and significant positive hierarchical regression between dialysis adequacy and psychological quality of life (β = 0.30, p = 0.05). Patients with adequate dialysis had higher MCS scores, indicating better psychological well-being. Regression and hierarchical analysis revealed that dialysis adequacy was a significant predictor of psychological quality of life, even after controlling for demographic and clinical variables. The findings suggest that adequate dialysis is essential for maintaining psychological quality of life among dialysis patients. The study highlights the importance of regular monitoring and optimization of dialysis treatment to improve patient outcomes. The results also underscore the need for a holistic approach to patient care, incorporating both physical and psychological aspects. The study’s findings have implications for clinical practice, policy, and future research. Healthcare providers should prioritize adequate dialysis and monitor patients’ psychological well-being. Policymakers can use the findings to inform guidelines and standards for dialysis care. Future research should investigate the longitudinal relationship between dialysis adequacy and psychological quality of life and explore interventions to improve patient outcomes. In conclusion, this study demonstrates a significant relationship between dialysis adequacy and psychological quality of life among dialysis patients. The findings have implications for clinical practice, suggesting that healthcare providers should prioritize adequate dialysis and monitor patients’ psychological well-being.
