Vignaharta in the Valley: Lord Ganesha's Timeless Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence
This paper explores the parallels between the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha and the development of artificial intelligence (AI). It argues that Ganesha's symbolism offers a comprehensive ethical and operational blueprint for responsible AI development. The analysis draws connections between Lord Ganesha's attributes and key aspects of AI and data science. Lord Ganesha's title "Vignaharta," the remover of obstacles, is paralleled with AI's problem-solving capabilities, while acknowledging that AI also creates new ethical challenges, such as algorithmic bias and job displacement. Lord Ganesha's large head and belly (Lambodara) represent the capacity to process vast amounts of data ("Big Data"), emphasising the importance of data preparation and the gap between data processing and true wisdom. The symbolism of Lord Ganesha's single tusk (Ekadanta) highlights the sacrifices required for AI development and the imperative to overcome biases for fair outcomes, mirroring the need for explainable AI. Furthermore, the divine consorts Siddhi (accomplishment) and Buddhi (intellect) illustrate the crucial balance between powerful algorithms and their ethical and beneficial application, emphasising responsible AI as the pursuit of Siddhi. Finally, Lord Ganesha's mouse vehicle (Mushak), symbolising the untamed mind, serves as a metaphor for the algorithm itself, highlighting the need for human oversight and governance principles to ensure AI's productive use. The paper concludes that Lord Ganesha's mythology provides a timeless framework for navigating the ethical and societal challenges posed by AI, advocating for the creation of systems that are not only intelligent but also fair, transparent, and beneficial to humanity.
