The cultural trap: The symbolic burden of Latin America.

This essay examines the persistent development gap in Latin America from a cultural and interdisciplinary perspective, arguing that beyond economic and political factors, a deeply rooted cultural matrix acts as the main obstacle to sustained progress. This matrix is characterized by historical resentment, clientelism, personalism, a systematic disregard for merit, and the uncritical reproduction of founding myths that perpetuate a collective identity anchored in dependence and victimization. The analysis explores its historical roots from the colonial era, its contemporary manifestations, and presents case studies of Argentina and Venezuela, contrasting them with successful development models. The work concludes with concrete proposals for overcoming this "cultural trap" through educational reform, institutional strengthening, and the construction of new narratives.
