Propiedades Terapéuticas del Romero (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) en el Manejo de la Diabetes Mellitus 2, Perspectivas Metabólicas y Clínicas: Una Revisión Bibliográfica

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and altered carbohydrate metabolism associated with insulin resistance; with a high prevalence. Among the medicinal plants used for the treatment of diabetes, rosemary has been found to have antioxidant, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. This review is focused on synthesizing the scientific evidence of the metabolic and clinical perspectives of Rosemary in the last 10 years (2015 to 2025), in the scientific databases Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science, following the methodology and guidelines of PRISMA. A total of 69 articles were obtained corresponding to the last 10 years in which the hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential of the plant was evidenced, as well as its effect on insulin resistance in addition to its use as an adjuvant in the conventional treatment of diabetes has been strengthened. Most of the studies are preclinical and in vitro, leaving a gap in the clinical research of its metabolic-clinical effects; therefore, we suggest expanding its study in patients with DM 2, and extending the therapeutic perspectives in this sector of society.
