El Yagé y la Medicina Tradicional una Revisión de Literatura desde el Contexto de la Conservación del Territorio en la Comunidad Indigena Awa de Villa Hermosa Nariño
This research presents a systematic review of the literature related to Yagé and ancestral medicine from 2000 to 2024, analyzing 50 publications from indexed sources. The research was conducted on scientific portals such as Google Scholar and Research Gate. It was identified that Yagé and its relationship with ancestral medicine have been traditionally used by Indigenous communities for medicinal, spiritual, and cultural purposes. The studies analyzed show that Yagé contains psychoactive compounds and beta-carboline alkaloids, which induce altered states of consciousness and have therapeutic potential. Meanwhile, in traditional contexts, the use of Yagé is associated with benefits in the treatment of physical and psychological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, addictions, and psychosomatic disorders, although scientific evidence is still limited and largely qualitative. Furthermore, the review points out that ancestral knowledge of Yagé is an integral part of Indigenous medicine, functioning as a ritual that combines healing, spiritual, and community aspects. It is concluded that, while the use of yagé in traditional contexts appears to have beneficial therapeutic effects, further rigorous clinical research is needed to understand its mechanisms, safety, and efficacy. The appreciation of yagé as part of ancestral medicine must respect cultural knowledge and promote an intercultural approach to research and health.
