Mapping emergent design and validation criteria for GenAI-based EdTech in higher education

This study investigates the emergent design and validation criteria for developing and implementing generative AI (GenAI)-based educational technologies in higher education. While traditional educational technology frameworks exist, they largely predate the widespread adoption of GenAI tools, which introduce novel pedagogical, ethical, and technical considerations. Using a scoping review methodology guided by the PRISMA-ScR framework, we will systematically map and synthesize evidence from the scientific literature on GenAI-based educational tools—defined as pedagogical systems leveraging GenAI to support and enhance learning tasks. The study aims to identify and consolidate design and validation criteria into a preliminary framework to guide researchers, educators, and developers in creating effective, ethical, and pedagogically aligned GenAI-based tools. Expected outcomes include a comprehensive mapping of current evidence, identification of research gaps, and a proposed foundation for future framework development in this rapidly evolving field.
