Cognitive Communication Disorders in Childhood and Adolescence after Traumatic Brain Injury
Abstract: Background: Cognitive communication disorders (CCD) may result from traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The prevalence of pediatric CCD and its impact on academic performance, social participation, and quality of life have been scarcely investigated. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search (following PRISMA-ScR guidelines) in eight databases. Sixty-two studies met the inclusion criteria, which we structured according to the prevalence of pediatric CCD, assessment instruments, impact on participation, academic performance, and quality of life. Results: CCD can affect all examined domains and become evident when faced with receptive and expressive linguistic demands at the text and discourse levels. Diagnosing and treating CCD is necessary to further enhance participation and developmental trajectories after pediatric TBI. Keywords: prevalence, participation, quality of life, pragmatics, linguistics
