OXIDIZED REGENERATED CELLULOSE (ORC): A PROMISING BIOPOLYMER FOR WOUND HEALING APPLICATIONS – A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Chronic wounds pose a significant burden on patients and healthcare systems worldwide, with millions of people affected globally. The complex and dynamic process of wound healing involves multiple stages, and impaired healing can lead to severe complications. In this comprehensive review, we explore the potential of oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC), a biopolymer derived from plant cell walls, as a promising biomaterial for wound healing applications. ORC has shown remarkable properties, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to promote cell proliferation and differentiation, making it an attractive material for wound dressing and tissue engineering. We provide an in-depth analysis of the current state of knowledge on ORC, its synthesis, characterization, and biological properties, as well as its applications in wound healing, include its effect in improving tissue regeneration, decreasing inflammation, and encouraging angiogenesis. This review highlights the potential of ORC as a promising biomaterial for the development of innovative wound healing technologies, offering new hope for the treatment of chronic wounds.
