Vardagsteknik som kontroll: Överlevares erfarenheter av digitalt våld i nära relationer

As everyday life becomes increasingly digitized, technology is no longer just a tool forconvenience – it can also serve as a means of control and abuse in intimate relationships. This study explores how individuals with lived experience of intimate partner violence (IPV)perceive and are affected by digital technologies, with a focus on how tools such as smarthome devices, mobile BankID, and GPS-tracking are used to monitor and exert power. Usinga qualitative research approach that includes diary reflections and in-depth interviews, thestudy highlights the subjective experiences of technology-facilitated abuse.Findings reveal that digital technology is often experienced as an extension of coercivecontrol, where technical ownership and access are weaponized to limit autonomy and safety. The study exposes systemic vulnerabilities in technology design – particularly the lack ofsafeguards against internal threats – and offers recommendations for creating more inclusive, protective, and ethically grounded digital systems that support digital sovereignty for allusers.
