Efectos del Uso Inadecuado de Insecticidas y Pesticidas en la Salud Respiratoria de Trabajadores del Sector Agrícola, Milagro, Ecuador. (2025)

This study aimed to analyze the effects of the inadequate use of insecticides and pesticides on the respiratory health of agricultural workers in the canton of Milagro, Ecuador. A qualitative and descriptive research approach was adopted to explore the experiences, perceptions, and working conditions of the workers. Semi-structured interviews, surveys, and a focus group were applied to a sample of 40 workers selected for their direct exposure to chemical products in banana and cocoa plantations. The results showed high exposure to pesticides, poor or absent use of personal protective equipment, and recurring respiratory symptoms among workers. Moreover, a lack of training on the safe handling of chemicals and limited access to medical assistance for respiratory issues was evident. These findings reveal a situation of labor and health vulnerability that demands urgent attention from public policy, particularly in areas of agricultural biosafety, occupational health, and preventive education. The study also highlights the need for comprehensive interventions to mitigate risks and ensure safe and dignified working conditions in rural environments.
