Understanding Autism from a Biblical Perspective: A Brief Overview

This short article explores the definition of autism under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004 and examines how the condition can be theologically understood within the context of the Holy Bible. Autism is defined in IDEA as a developmental disability impacting communication, social interaction, and educational and functional performance (EFP), with specific diagnostic criteria and exceptions. Although autism is not explicitly mentioned in the Holy Bible, both the Old and New Testaments offer several foundational theological principles, e.g., the Imago Dei, God’s inclusive vision, and the diverse gifts within the Body of Christ, that support a respectful and affirming view of neurodiversity. Disability theology affirms that individuals with autism are full participants in God’s creation and community, challenging reductive or exclusionary attitudes. By bridging legal definitions and theological insights, the article highlights the importance of recognizing autism as a valuable aspect of human diversity, both educationally and spiritually.
