Comparative Considerations of Noble Gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) in Ultrafast Imaging – A Conceptual Thought Experiment

This work presents a conceptual thought experiment on the role of noble gases in ultrafast imaging. While helium is routinely employed as the standard medium due to its minimal polarizability and high ionization energy, the intuitive idea arises whether heavier noble gases such as neon, argon, krypton, or xenon could offer advantages. A systematic comparison is presented, considering atomic mass, ionization energy, and polarizability. The analysis shows that although heavier gases provide greater inertia, they also introduce stronger interactions with external fields. This duality explains the continued dominance of helium in precision experiments, while at the same time highlighting possible alternative contexts where heavier noble gases may prove beneficial. The study is intended as a thought experiment, not as an experimental result, aiming to broaden conceptual reflection on experimental design in ultrafast physics.
