Length Contraction – Corrective Overview
Abstract Length contraction in special relativity is often presented in a confusing or misleading way. The correct statement: an object moving relative to an inertial observer is measured to be shorter along the direction of motion by a factor of . This effect is not a physical squishing of the object but a difference in how distances are measured between frames due to relativity of simultaneity. This note derives the result, gives examples, and addresses misconceptions.
