A Simple Guide to Delivering Medicine Through the Skin

Transdermal drug delivery has become a novel way to achieve systemic drug absorption over a long period of time at a predetermined rate. Its key advantages include lower dose frequency, avoidance of first-pass metabolism by entering directly into systemic circulation, suitability for elderly patients who cannot take medications orally, and the capacity to be self-administered with less side effects. This review discusses general topics such as drug absorption paths through the skin, drug absorption kinetics, numerous factors influencing transdermal permeability, different types of transdermal patches, their components, and evaluation parameters. The efficacy of any TDDS is dependent on the drug's ability to penetrate skin in sufficient amounts to provide the desired therapeutic effect. This review article gives a full analysis of transdermal, including benefits, drawbacks, mechanisms, factors influencing skin permeability, and kinds. Transdermal patch characterization is used to assess the patch's quality, size, adhesive properties, weight, uniformity, moisture content, and time of commencement and endurance.
