The Mathematical Genesis of Time

We adopt a geometric--operational stance rather than a medium hypothesis: the phase--induced refractive index \(N(x,t)=\exp\{\beta_n\,\delta(x,t)\}\) is treated as the optical avatar of a weak--field metric. Under local Lorentz invariance the light--cone speed \(c_0\) is fixed; gravity enters optics via path–length and clock dilation. In the weak–field limit \(N(x)\simeq 1-2\Phi(x)/c_0^2\), implying the gradient law \(\mathbf{g}=\tfrac{c_0^2}{2}\nabla\ln N\) consistent with Shapiro delay and lensing. Operational time is set by a light clock; the Maxwell/eikonal layer predicts group delay \(\Delta t=(1/c_0)\int (N-1)\,ds\). We test this phase\(\to\)metric chain with frozen, \emph{a priori} bandwidths and a single one--shot calibration of \(\beta_n\) on clean data (no retuning). Two falsifiable checks are run on blinded segments and Monte Carlo noise scans: (i) \emph{Maxwell--layer delay}---the predicted \(\Delta t\) from \(\int(N-1)\,ds\) matches measured delays; and (ii) a \emph{dimensionless \(c_0\)-link closure} \[ \Pi(t^\*)=\frac{\tfrac{c_0^2}{2}\,\operatorname{median}_x\,\partial_x\ln N(x,t^\*)} {\operatorname{median}_x\,g_x(x,t^\*)}\approx 1, \] evaluated at a boundary--safe, structurally locked instant \(t^\*\) (from a fixed \(K\!\approx\!2\) selector). Empirically, within a weak--field contrast budget and fixed spectral bandwidth, \(\Delta t\) agreement and \(\Pi\!\approx\!1\) co--hold; randomizing or over--smoothing the spectrum breaks both simultaneously, yielding a clear, refutable validation of the geometric--electromagnetic link. (An optional unitful estimator for \(G\) based on structural ratios can be reported separately; here we focus on the unit--free \(c_0\)-link closure and group--delay consistency.)
