Educators' Research Engagement: A Mixed-Methods Study on Perceptions and Hesitancy in Writing for Professional Development

Abstract

This mixed-methods study investigates the relationship between educators' perceptions of research writing and their hesitancy to engage in it, framed within professional development. While many educators acknowledge the value of research in enhancing teaching and institutional practices, actual participation rates remain low. The study aimed to examine whether positive perceptions correlate with reduced hesitancy and to explore the underlying factors contributing to this dynamic. Using a sequential explanatory design, quantitative data were collected from 60 educators through a 5-point Likert-type questionnaire assessing their perceptions and hesitancy toward research writing. Statistical analyses included an independent samples t-test and Pearson correlation. Results revealed a significant difference between perception (M = 3.22) and hesitancy (M = 2.09), and a strong negative correlation between the two variables (r = -0.612, p = 0.001), indicating that higher positive perceptions are associated with lower hesitancy. Qualitative data from open-ended responses were thematically analyzed to uncover deeper insights. Key themes emerged: time constraints, lack of confidence, need for institutional support, and the value of collaborative research. These narratives supported the quantitative findings, highlighting the complex interplay of psychological, professional, and institutional factors. The study concludes that fostering positive perceptions alone is insufficient. Educational institutions must implement structural and motivational interventions to reduce barriers and empower educators to engage in research meaningfully. Enhancing research culture can transform research writing from a compliance requirement into a valued practice in professional development.

Keywords: research writing, teacher perceptions, hesitancy, professional development, mixed-methods, educational research
