Emergency Preparedness among Older adults living Independently: : Aqualitative interview study of perceptions and practices

This study aimed to explore how older adults living independently in Sweden perceive their preparedness for crises, with a focus on locus of control and social capital. Using a qualitative method, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted and thematically analyzed. The theoretical framework combined psychological and social perspectives to understand how perceptions of responsibility and access to support shape preparedness. Findings show that participants feel practically prepared, drawing on life experiences rather than institutional guidance. A strong internal locus of control was evident, alongside a clear reliance on close social networks for emotional and practical support. However, public institutions were often viewed with distrust, while actors from civil society were considered more accessible. This study concludes that preparedness among older adults is shaped by the interplay between perceived personal control and the availability of social resources. It calls for more inclusive preparedness strategies that recognize and leverage the strength of older populations.
