Ett personcentrerat vårdande av personer med demenssjukdom : En allmän litteraturöversikt ur ett sjuksköterskeperspektiv
Background: Nurses are expected to be competent in providing person-centered care (PCC). PCC is tailored to the needs and preferences of the individual. People with dementia describe the challenges of living with dementia and the importance of being treated as persons. They describe the need for PCC and their experiences of this. Nurses have an important nursing responsibility and need to strive to ensure that the care received by people with dementia is based on PCC. Aim: To map nurses' experiences of working based on person-centered care for people with dementia. Method: A general literature review with 13 health science articles with both qualitative and quantitative approaches were analyzed. Results: Nurses described the importance of trying to understand people with dementia. They described different nursing strategies in caregiving and having knowledge about dementia care as important aspects for PCC. Several challenges that affected their ability to provide PCC were mentioned. Conclusion: PCC should be based on the person being cared for. An understanding of who the person really is places demands on nurses. More openness, better strategies, broader knowledge and an improved working environment are needed to provide good PCC for people with dementia.
