The Experience of Sexual and Gender Diversity in People with an Intellectual Disability
This thesis portfolio comprises three parts:Part One: Systematic Literature ReviewThe systematic literature review explores how women with intellectual disabilities experience their sexuality including those who experience sexuality diversity. A systematic search identified nine studies which were included. A thematic synthesis with an assessment of study quality was conducted. Conclusions and implications for future research discussed.Part Two: Empirical PaperThe empirical paper explores what the attitudes and beliefs of those who have an intellectual disability who do not identify as LGBTQ+ have towards those who identify as LGBTQ+. Four individuals participated in semi-structured interview which aimed to explore their knowledge and belief about LGBTQ+ people, and what influenced these beliefs. Three themes were identified around perceptions of sexuality, confusion around gender identities, and historical and current influences. The findings are discussed in relation to theoretical and empirical literature, with implications and suggestions for future research discussed.Part Three: AppendicesThe appendices provide information to supplement part one and part two, with the inclusion of an epistemological stance and a reflective statement.
