Black feminism between Najwa Ben Shatwan and Toni Morrison النسوية السوداء بين نجوى بن شتوان وتوني موريسون

This article stages a comparative analysis of Najwa Bin Shatwan’s Slave Pens (2016) and Toni Morrison’s A Mercy (2008), arguing that both novels, despite their distinct cultural contexts, deploy a shared narrative strategy: they construct Black female identity through the lens of what this study terms "anthropological trauma." By examining the biological, social, cultural, and anthropological dimensions of their protagonists' experiences, the paper reveals how both authors dismantle romanticized notions of motherhood and expose the brutal commodification of the Black female body. While Bin Shatwan’s narrative focuses on the legacy of Ottoman-era slavery in Libya, and Morrison’s explores the pre-racialized origins of bondage in colonial America, this study concludes that both texts converge in portraying the Black woman’s body as a site of historical inscription and her consciousness as a space of resilient, albeit painful, resistance. Abstract
